Beavercreek Phoenix Invitational 2.5-ish

Saturday, 20 December 2014
at Beavercreek, OH

Welcome back to our second-ish BPI.  We were snowed out completely last year, so that didn't quite count. We're back at Beavercreek High School and hoping for no snow!

  • Registration will run from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 with the opening meeting at 8:15 and all rounds starting by 8:30.  Our goal is to finish awards by 3:45 p.m.
  • We hope to offer 3 rounds in Congressional and Policy* Debates, 4 rounds in IE, and 5 in LD and PF Debate (no finals).  But we might modify that based on entries and rooms.
  • Double-entries are allowed in all Speech events. We are encouraging double-entry, so the second entry will be $3 cheaper!  (Will be done manually at check-in; Speechwire won't do it automatically.)  Please let us know if you have a student who wants to do both extemps; we're not categorically opposed, but would like to discuss it first to make sure it won't delay anything. Both entries can be in Duo, but each must be with a different partner.
  • If a PF or Policy teammate drops, the maverick may compete, but will not be eligible to earn any awards.

*Policy Debate contingent on interest. Please sign up Policy teams as soon as you can.

Judging:

•       1 judge covers up to 2 LD, PF, or Policy entries; up to 5 IE entries; or up to 6 Congress entries.
•       Each missing judge = $50.00 fee. A limited number of judges may be available for hire at $40 each; please contact us by the Monday before if you want to ask about hiring.

Fees:
$10 per school, plus:
•       $5 per IE entry ($10 per Duo)
•       ($3 discount for each double-entered student)
•       $5 per LD or Congress entry
•       $10 per PF or Policy entry

Please make checks out to "Beavercreek City Schools".
If you will not be bringing cash/check to the tournament, please send to:

Debate Topics will be the December Resolutions:

  • PF will debate: Resolved: For-profit prisons in the United States should be banned.
  • LD will debate Resolved: The "right to be forgotten" from Internet searches ought to be a civil right.
  • Policy will debate: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth's oceans.

Congressional Debate Rules:

  • In Congress, authorship rights will be given to students from the submitting school, if any are present in the chamber.  This means that students from that school will have priority over all other students to give the first affirmative speech, trumping precedence and recency rules.  This only applies to the first affirmative speech on each item.
  • Debate on bills and resolutions must begin with an affirmative speech.  If there is no affirmative, the PO shall table the item without a vote.  It can be removed from the table if an affirmative speech arises later.
  • One-sided debate should be discouraged, and it reflects poorly on the debaters who continue to beat the dead horse, however POs have no power to end debate on their own (even heavily one-sided debate) until the previous question is called by a member on the floor or no speakers rise to debate on either side.
  • Only the OHSSL-recommended items for the Dec 20th weekend may be debated.  (They can, of course, be amended as needed.)

Extemp:

  • Students are responsible for their own electrical power, if needed.  We don't guarantee access to outlets in the prep room, so do not expect to plug in.

Top Novice Award:

  • We will be recognizing the top-finishing novice competitor in all events.  "Novices" are students in their first year of high school forensics (regardless of event or number of tournaments).
  • For team events, both partners must be novices for the team to be eligible.
  • To mark an entry as a novice, please enter them in the "Novice" division of their event when you register.  Novices and Varsity will still compete in the same pool as usual, this just flags the entry for us as novice award-eligible.

All events will be at Beavercreek High School, 2600 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Beavercreek OH.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Note: None of our coaches work in the school during the day, so if you need to reach me, e-mail is best irexroad@gmail.com (call/text also works 773-273-9529).  If you contact the school directly, the best they could do is take a message.

Thanks for coming!
