Northwest Illinois Novice/Varsity Invitational
General information
This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Illinois. View manager contact information
You are invited to the January 10 Northwest Illinois Novice/Varsity Invitational Speech Tournament, formerly the Lena-Winslow Invitational. We changed the name to more accurately reflect the composition of our own coop arrangement, which consists of teams from Lena, Stockton, Orangeville, and Warren. Next year, we're adding Downers Grove North and Carbondale. You'll be notified a year in advance when we absorb your team.
As I've stated in past years, ours is a good tournament for younger kids (AKA novices), so if you were planning on sending your "A" team into the suburbs that day, send your other kids to us. It may be one of the final times this season they hear their names called out on stage. By the same token, our tournament kicks off the second half of the season for many of us, so it's also a good chance to get your top varsity kids tuned up a little bit more in preparation for the State Series in February.
Because we're inconveniently located in the provinces and our tournament is in January, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you planned on getting here around 7:15. If we get hit with snow, it may take you longer than planned to get here. For those who have not been here before, the event is in the Le-Win Junior High/Elementary building, NOT the high school. Your buses will park in the large lot on the right hand side of the road after you turn onto Fremont Street, and you will enter the first set of double doors facing the street. There will also be a girls basketball tournament the same day at the high school, so please don't park in the high school lot.
Here are the basics:
FEE- $100. Send it now or bring it with you.
JUDGES- One per every five entries.
ENTRIES- Kids may be double entered. The official number of entries per category will be set at three. If you wish to bring more than three per any one category, send me a note first, and we'll talk about it. If I do say it's OK, my only request is for you to find another judge or two. I'd rather have judges than more money through higher entry fees (but, I won't turn down a few extra bucks either).
STRUCTURE- There will be two preliminary rounds and one final. The first round will be double judged and the second one single judged. Novice finals will single judged, and if the people are available, varsity finals will be triple judged. If not, they'll be double judged. I'm not concerned about ties as a result. That will be one "informality" of this tournament that I'll stick with. If more kids hear their names called out to receive an award, then great.
RADIO & EXTEMP- One prep for radio and extemp (7:45 AM) prelims and one for varsity and novice finals. We provide radio material.
PLEASE READ THIS CONCERNING AN IMPROMPTU RULE CHANGE: You may or may not be aware of this, but beginning this year the IHSA has eliminated individual words as impromptu prompts. The new rule states: "Topics will be chosen from the following categories: Quotations, Phrases and Proverbs." We will follow this new rule.
AWARDS- Medals for varsity finalists, ribbons for novice, and trophies for the top three teams.
FOOD- Good and relatively inexpensive
COMMENTS, QUESTIONS- Call me at 815/616-0926 (cell), 815/369-3134 (office), 815/233-0383 (home)
Hope to see you next January.
