Dear Coaches,

We are excited to invite you to the Lincoln Community High School "Speech for the Stars" Railer speech tournament on Saturday, January 17, 2015.  Important information regarding the tournament is noted below.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me at jkeith@lchs.k12.il.us.

FORMAT AND SCHEDULE

Registration will begin at 7:15 and will be in front of main office (near main entrance by the auditorium hallway).  All students will compete in two preliminary rounds spread across four flights.  The top six competitors in each event (including ties) will advance to the final.  We will be combining Varsity and Junior Varsity during the preliminary rounds, but will have separate finals. Triple entries are allowed.

EVENT INFORMATION

Extemp will prep for each round in the IMC.

Radio should bring a script ready to present with news no more than 24 hours old.

We will follow IHSA rules in all other events.

We will not be assigning penalties for time in the tab room other than in Radio.

ENTRIES AND FEES

Teams may enter as many competitors in the events as they wish. The top three competitors in each event will be added to tabulate sweeps points, however.

1-7 Entries:   $75
8-14 Entries:  $100
15-28 Entries:  $125
29-42 Entries:  $150
43-56 Entries:  $200

Adds/drops online will close at NOON on Friday, January 16, 2015, to allow us time to schedule and print the schematics. Please email any other drops as soon as you are aware of them – jkeith@lchs.k12.il.us or text Jennifer Keith at 217.314.9114, even the morning of the tournament, as soon as they are known to you. We MAY be able to do adds the morning of, we may not. We will attempt to accommodate as many requests as possible.

The tournament is listed as "open" but will max out at 20 competing schools.

JUDGES

Each school will be required to provide one judge for every six entries or fraction thereof.  Judges are capped at eight.  We will have hired judges available for a fee of $100 for the day.  If you need to hire a judge from Lincoln, please contact us by January 15.  In order to ensure that the tournament runs on time, it is essential that ALL judges be available for finals.

1-6 entries:  1 judge
7-12 entries:  2 judges
13-18 entries:  3 judges
19-24 entries:  4 judges
25-30 entries:  5 judges
31-36 entries:  6 judges
37-42 entries:  7 judges

43+ entries: 8 judges

Please make sure your judges are well versed in the areas they are judging – at least know the basic rules. The team packet will include “how to write a great critique” instruction sheet but there may not be enough time for your judges to review it completely before the rounds begin.

SCHEDULE

As we near the IHSA State Series, we will use their schedule for at least the morning. Rounds will run at 8:30, 9:45, 11, 12:15 and we will try to get finals running by 2 p.m. with allowing breaks for judges to eat. Awards will be tentative for 3:30 if all finals can run simultaneously.

Please plan on purchasing from our stand as it is our main fundraiser for the year.

*Judge/coach hospitality will be in the foods room by the cafeteria with soups and snacks available throughout the day.

WEATHER

As we all know, last school year was a banner one weather-wise, so we hope we will not have any inclement weather that closes tournaments. Of course, please use your best judgment when determining whether or not to brave the trip. In case of inclement weather, I will notify head coaches as soon as I know if there is a cancellation (preferably the night before), so please make sure your registration includes a reliable contact number. If you choose, as a team, to register and not attend, the registration fee will be expected. If the tournament is canceled, any payments will be returned.

AWARDS

We will have medals for the top six varsity finalists and certificates for the top six junior varsity finalists.  Additionally, we will have trophies for the top three teams.

We hope you'll be able to join us on the 17th!

Jennifer Keith, Wyatt Phillis, Betsy Buttell and the LCHS speechies!
