Awards and Sweepstakes Information

Awards will be given to places 6th-1st in Individual Events & Congressional Debate, to the quarterfinalists and above in Public Forum and Lincoln/Douglas Debate, and to the semifinalists and above for the two-person PDQ competitors.

Team sweepstakes awards will be determined by the best contestant(s) in each event for each team (preliminary rounds only):
  • IE: 3 pts. for each “1” ranking, 2 pts. for each “2”, and 1 pt. for each “3”
  • L/D and PF: 2.5 points per win.
  • 2-Person PDQ: 1.8 points per win.
  • Congress: 3 points for each “6” or "5" ranking, 2 pts. for each “4”, and 1 pt. for each “3”
  1. No more than 9 points will be awarded per category.
  2. Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top six teams competing.

Congressional Debate
  1. Congressional Debate will use the OHSSL legislation reserved for the weekend of January 16-17.
  2. The Docket can be downloaded from the FILES FOR DOWNLOAD tab on or before January 5. The legislation has been split between the sessions and supers. Competitiors will only be allowed to debate the assigned legislation during each session.
  3. The number of students breaking to super chamber will be determined by the number of preliminary chambers.  [3=5 per chamber; 4=4 per chamber; 5=3 per chamber; 6=3 per chamber]
  4. Base will be used during preliminary sessions to determine who will break to Super Session. Base will then be used during Super Session to determine the top six speakers. Once the top six in Super Session have been determined, judges will rank these top six students using judge preference.
  5. Chamber Expectations:
  • Each chamber will be responsible for determining how they will set the docket. Because only 3 bills will be used for each preliminary session, the tab staff strongly recommends that the chambers use the voting method (one vote per contestant).
  • For prelims, chambers will be allowed to elect up to 3 different presiding officers
  • Precedence/Recency will NOT reset during prelims
  • Legislation RESERVED for super chamber is not to be used during prelims
  • Super Chamber will be allowed to elect two POs and will debate for 2 hours

Topics

Policy Debate: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth’s oceans.
Lincoln/Douglas: the January/February topic
Public Forum: the January topic
Extemp.: Current event topics of notable interest during the past three months.
Student Congress: OHSSL legislation corresponding to January 17-18. Docket will be available in Files for Download.
