&
DEBATE-Kansas City

Coaches, Directors, Teams, and Friends,

We are thrilled to invite you to the beautiful campus of Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri (the summer home of the Kansas City Chiefs!) for our inaugural Golden Griffon Invitational. We are committed to hosting a quality tournament that meets the needs of the local and regional high school speech and debate programs.  The tournament will be held on campus on November 14-15, 2014.

We are excited to announce that we are a National Individual Events Tournament of Champions qualifying bid tournament!

Events

This tournament will feature Extemporaneous Speaking, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, Storytelling, Student Congress, Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Public Forum.

We offer Novice and Open divisions in Policy debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Public Forum.

In Congress we will utilize the Greater Kansas City Area Conference Legislation – the docket can be found on the Speechwire registration page under "Files for Download".

Judging

We are committed to providing strong, professional, and competent judges. To that end, we have sought a means to provide wonderful incentives to attract quality critics. One of the special benefits DEBATE-KC offers will be their deep, experienced, and incredibly knowledgeable judging pool. Additionally, DEBATE-KC will be offering payment to qualified critics in Policy debate.

We strongly encourage those interested in judging who have significant experience to contact the tournament director to discuss hiring processes.

Please bring one qualified judge for every three teams in Policy debate.

Awards

We will offer trophies for finalists in speech and interpretative events.  We will give trophies for quarterfinalists and beyond in both divisions of Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum.
In addition to the individual trophies, we will also be giving Top Speaker trophies to the top ten debaters in Policy debate. What is especially important: the Top Speaker of the Golden Griffon Invitational will receive a wrestling-style Championship Belt.

We will recognize the top three overall sweepstakes winners with trophies.

The winner of the tournament will receive a beautiful bronze griffon trophy that is a replica of our university’s statue centered in the middle of campus. This will serve as the tournament’s traveling trophy from year to year; each year’s winner will have the name etched into the base of the trophy.

We will also award sweepstakes winners in the three separate categories of speech, interpretation, and debate. Finally, we will award a Power Sweepstakes trophy to the program with the highest placing to entry ratio.

Walter Cronkite Memorial

The Walter Cronkite Memorial was the vision of Dr. Robert Vartabedian, President of Missouri Western State University, to create a fitting memorial to St. Joseph’s beloved native son and one of the most important and trusted voices in our country’s history. Dr. Vartabedian’s vision was captured by Missouri Western art faculty members Eric Fuson and David Harris, who designed the unique artistic display illustrating Cronkite’s distinguished career with CBS television.

The memorial can be found on the ground floor of Spratt Hall with interactive TV displays and memorabilia cases that include Cronkite’s Emmy. We encourage students between rounds to visit the memorial and learn about one of the most influential journalists in America’s history. Naturally, we will be honoring Walter Cronkite’s influence in promulgating vital information to the general public by naming the Extemporaneous Speaking 1st place trophy after him.

Hospitality

We are hoping to provide a quality hospitality room to coaches and judges with tasty treats from the St. Joseph area.
For students we will have the food court available all day Friday and much of Saturday which includes a Subway, a Chinese restaurant, an American grill option, as well as a Java City coffee stand.

Entry Fees

We are committed to keeping entry fees low in order to provide as much accessibility as possible for students and programs.
