Dear Speech and Debate Coach,

The Bulgarian Forensics League (BFL), in conjunction with the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), invites all high school students to register now for its Second Annual BFL AUBG Speech and Debate Tournament. The tournament will be held on April 25-26, 2014 at the American University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad. This competition will be a challenging, engaging, and fun opportunity for students to practice their public speaking and argumentation skills in English, as well as meet other motivated students from around the country.

This tournament is very special for BFL, because this will be our first tournament where the top students in Duo and Oratory will qualify to compete in the United States at the National Forensic League (NFL) tournament on June 15-21, 2014, in Overland Park, Kansas. To be eligible, both schools and individual students MUST be members of the NFL. Please visit BFL's website for more details. Students don’t have to be members of NFL to compete in other events at the tournament! This is only if the student is competing for a chance to go to the USA (registering for USA-Qualifying divisions in Original Oratory and Duo).

Students can compete individually in the following events: Prose, Poetry, or Oratory. They can also compete in teams of two in Duo or teams of three in Karl Popper Debate. Detailed explanations and rules for each event are outlined in the Events Overview page. Winners will receive trophies, medals, certificates, and local media publicity.

For this tournament, only Prose, Poetry, and Karl Popper Debate, will be divided into Novice Level (Grades 8 and 9) and Varsity Level (Grades 10, 11, 12). Oratory and Duo will be divided between the USA-Qualifying competitors and Non-Qualifying competitors. There will be NO age difference for these two categories. (Thus, 8th and 9th graders may compete in either category, including USA-Qualifying, and 10th, 11th, and 12th graders may also compete in either category, including the Non-Qualifying division.)

Coaches must read BFL’s updated rules regarding speech and debate events. Additionally, if students are competing in Duo, coaches must have all scripts approved by BFL at least two weeks before the AUBG tournament. In order to do this, coaches must send the title, author, ISBN number, and the cutting of the piece to bulgarianforensicleague@gmail.com for approval. Coaches are also required to send copies of students’ Original Oratory pieces to be checked for originality. We urge coaches to send pieces and cuttings as soon as possible, in order to take care of any issues, which may arise. The sooner we receive your scripts and speeches, the sooner we can approve them.

Please note, it is strictly against the rules to copy pieces (across all categories) off YouTube. If your students have found their pieces off of YouTube (or another online video channel), please make sure that their performances are original and their own. If pieces are found to be similar to online video performances, they will be disqualified. We greatly appreciate your collaboration in making sure that students show their original creativity through their performances!

Please browse through the informational pages on this website (links available at the top of the page) for more information.  Please remember that each registered team is required to bring at least one judge to be available to judge rounds throughout the duration of the tournament.  This judge’s (and all judges') costs of attendance of the tournament will be compensation by BFL.  Please register all of your judges via SpeechWire by the registration deadline.  Your registration will not be considered complete unless at least one judge is registered with your team.  However, please note, that each school is required to bring a chaperone in addition to the judge in order to ensure student safety and well-being.  Schools are expected to cover expenses of attendance for their chaperones.

Please register your students through the SpeechWire website. Registration will close on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11:59 PM. Please direct any questions to bulgarianforensicleague@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you and your students in Blagoevgrad!
