RE:      Section Qualifiers

Congratulations!  Reaching the Section 8A speech contest is a definite accomplishment.  One more step in the path toward MSHSL State on Saturday, April 12^th at Blaine High School.

The following details will help you prepare for the Section 8A tournament on April 1^st.

1. Extemp Speaking draws will begin at 1:30 in the HS Media Center.
2. Storytelling and Reading draws will begin at 1:30 in the Old Gym area.
3. Please arrive between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. to help registration advance smoothly.
4. Fosston has graciously dismissed school at noon.  Have your team congregate in the cafeteria.  We won’t use the gym until awards.
5. A tournament entry fee of $15.00 per individual (duo teams are $30) will be collected when you register.  Please make checks payable to:  Region 8A.
6. There are four time lines:  Round I-2:00, Round II-3:30, Finals-5:00 and Finals-6:00 p.m.  Awards are tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m., or earlier, in the new gym.
7. You will need to furnish at least one timer for every 15 contestants entered in the Section 8A tournament that is not a head coach. There will be a timer’s meeting in the large half of the Home Ec. Room at 1:45 p.m.  Timer’s will be assigned a room and will stay in that room for rounds I and II.  Not all timers will time in the finals.  Time cards will be furnished, but you will need to have a stopwatch capable of displaying seconds. It is best if head coaches can be free during the 5:00 time line for a coach meeting.
8. Remember: Turn in ALL scripts upon registration.  Don’t rely on the subsection manager to do this – scripts can and do change from subs to sections.  Include the student’s name, school and category in the heading of the first page. The Tab Room will keep the scripts in an envelope and access as needed for rules violations.  The envelope will be returned with critic sheets and results.
9. There will be concessions available for your students.  Coaches and judges will have a host of culinary delights courtesy of Fosston HS.
10. All coaches of section finalists will need to fill out a form before leaving the building.  We will have those forms available in the Tab Room. Many times the Tab Room staff will have the form nearly completed for you to check.  All state entries and alternates need to be entered on the MSHSL website within 24 hours of our contest – so this information is essential.
11. If there are any questions, feel free to call. 
12. Remember, each coach needs to bring $3.00 for the Section coach of the year award.
