December 11, 2013

Greetings! Coaches Jason Newhouser and Curtis Altman cordially invite you to attend the JEFForensics Speech Tournament on Saturday, January 18, 2014.

Registration will only be accepted via SpeechWire. The deadline for registration is 4:00PM, Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Please be sure to include your email address so that we can email you a confirmation.

Our tournament will offer humorous, dramatic, declamation, discussion, prose, poetry, original oratory, impromptu, international extemp, domestic extemp, scripted duo, memorized duo, original performance, improvisational duo, and radio.

Specific event information is as follows:

  • Discussion – Each round will be run as a Socratic Seminar featuring a different text for discussion. Texts will be provided at the round. Seminar Leaders (equivalent of a student moderator) will be determined by the participants in the round. Discussion rounds will be staggered, so double-entered discussers should attend their other event first.
  • Extemp – Extemp will draw first and third rounds. If there are a small number of entries in the two extemp events, the events may be combined for more competition.
  • Improv Duo – Teams will be given a prompt and one-minute prep time to plan their skit. Skits may include interaction between team members, including eye and physical contact. Props, however, may not be used.
  • Radio – Contestants will need to prepare a two-minute newscast. Contestants will prepare their own commercial and editorial with information provided. The on-the-spot information for the final round will be provided.

A school may have 50 entries total with no more than five entries in each event. Pick-Ups will not be available at this tournament.

Contestants may double in all events. Contestants may not double in scripted and memorized duo. Contestants may also triple at this tournament in all events except discussion. There will be a special award for the triple-entered student who scores the best in their events. Contestants double and triple at their own risk! If a contestant is late (within 10 minutes of the starting time for the next round) to a second or third event – no matter the reason – the contestant will be marked last in that round. Again, contestants double and triple at their own risk!

Teams must provide one judge for every five entries or fraction thereof. For example, if you have 12 entries, you will need three judges. Any school failing to bring their assigned number of judges per their registration will not be eligible to earn a team trophy.

Team trophies will be given to the top 10 teams. Ribbons will be awarded to the top 10 in each event. The host school is eligible for all earned awards.

There will be three rounds and a final round in each event. Rounds will run at 8:30AM, 10:00AM, 11:30AM, and 2:00PM. Concessions will be available from 7:00AM to awards. Please help support JEFForensics by purchasing our concessions!

Registration will begin at 7:00AM in the main office. Busses may drop students off at the school entrances on Hiatt Drive. Busses may park behind the school by the gym. If you would like more information of directions to Jefferson High School, please let us know.

If you have any other questions, please contact us. Thank you and hope to see you at the tournament!
