St. Rita's School Elementary Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament

 

Greetings to all the elementary teachers, parents, and students!
 

On Thursday, December 5th, St. Rita's School will be hosting the second elementary tournament of the 2013-2014 school year, and we hope that your school or organization will be joining us. This tournament provides a unique opportunity for students in 3rd - 5th grades to participate in competition speech and debates. Events are drawn from the National Forensics League, with times and rules adapted for the elementary school level.

 

Events:

Expository:

Memorized speech

Maximum Time Limit: 5 min

Storytelling:

Memorized interpretation event

No props

Maximum Time Limit: 5 min

Poetry:

Memorized interpretation event

No props

Maximum Time Limit: 5 min

Duo Interp:

Two person memorized interpretation event

No props

Duo interp rules light – (looking at the partner and touching the partner are discouraged, but not actually penalized.)

Impromptu:

Student will be given 3 topics and choose one.

Topics will be concrete and abstract nouns.

Students may bring one note card or piece of paper up with them when they speak.

Students will have 2 minutes to prep.

Students will then speak for up to 5 minutes.

SPAR:

Impromptu debate event.

Students may not enter round with any materials prepared before the round.

Side will be determined by coinflip each round.

Rounds structure:

3 min opening aff.

2 min cross examination of aff by neg

3 min opening neg

2 min cross examination of neg by aff

2 minute rebuttal aff

2 minute rebuttal neg

1 minute final focus aff

1 min final focus neg

Public Forum

Resolved: Developed nations have a moral obligation to mitigate the effects of climat change.

Schedule:
Given the shorter time limits at the elementary level, most rounds will take less than 30 minutes. If we must double up spar matchups each round, a spar round may take slightly longer than 30 minutes. Regardless, the following schedule is very realistic:
 

3:30 – All schools meet in assembly area for announcements and postings

4:00 – Doors close for Round 1

4:30 – Postings up for round 2

4:45 – Doors close for Round 2

5:15 – Postings up for Round 3

5:30 – Doors close for Round 3

6:00 – Final Rounds for SPAR and PF -- time permitting.  Rooms TBA.

6:30 – Awards Ceremony in O'Mally Hall.

 

Food:

Food will be available for purchase in O'Malley Hall.

 

Assembly Area:

O'Malley Hall -- located below the church.  Enter directly from the parking lot.

 

Judging Requirements:

We are expecting to have enough student judges, however, please be prepared to bring judges in the event we come up short.

 

Fees:

$7 per individual entry. – Please make check out to St. Rita Drama Club
