The 22nd Annual Dolores Korfhage Hilke Memorial Speech Invitational

Thanks to the generosity of the family of the late Dolores Korfhage Hilke, a former South St. Paul speech great, South St. Paul is again extending this invitation to our tournament, which will be held March 8.  You will note that the format of our tournament, site-scheduled, with three rounds and no finals, is especially congenial to small and mid-size teams, while still offering you and your students a rewarding, competitive experience.

REGISTRATION: We are again using www.speechwire.com for registration and scheduling. Our school can accommodate approximately 600-650 competitors—so please register by 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 4.  After that date we will accommodate registrations only as space permits.

ENTRY LIMITS:   Since our goal is to provide a rewarding tournament for small and mid-size teams, registration is limited to no more than 56 entries per team for the 13 MSHSL events.  We will allow double entries.  Also, we will again offer students the opportunity to try a 14th category, IMPROMPTU. This year we are also offering an newly proposed version of extemporaneous reading, as presented at last September’s CTAM meetings.  Please check the General Information section for details on these two events.  Entries in these latter two events do not count against the team entry limit!  No triple entries allowed!

IMPROMPTU: All schools registering students in impromptu are encouraged to check out the details under General Information and some sample topics from past years. The material is there specifically to provide students a chance to practice this new and fun event prior to the competition.

PROPOSED EXTEMP RDG:   Do you have students ready for a new challenge?  Check out this possibility.  It throws a new twist on our long-running extemporaneous reading category…a twist that makes it much more extemporaneous! See a detailed explanation under FILES FOR DOWNLOAD!  We will not charge for speakers entered in the proposed Extemp Reading category, but you will need to count them in the judge tally and provide judges for the total tally.

FEE: $6.00 per student.  Each duo event counts as one student for purposes of assessing fees and judging obligations.  Your fees are based on your registration as of March 4.  There will be no refunds for drops after that time. If you choose to mail your check, please send it to South St Paul High School, attn: Ceil McDonald, 700 N 2nd St., South St Paul, MN 55075.

JUDGES: Bring one judge for each six competitors or fraction thereof.  Because our goal is to provide a quality experience for both competitors and judges, we work hard to keep sections, as much as possible, to six and at most seven contestants. Therefore, your judge obligation is based on your March 4 registration and will NOT be affected by drops.

AWARDS: Trophies will be presented to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each event; with our beautiful rosette ribbons awarded through 8th place.  Team trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place schools.

SCHEDULE: Our tournament is site-scheduled.  Registration is from 7:30-8:20.  It is essential that your team be present and registered by 8:20.  Once we begin computer scheduling, no teams or students can be added. In fact, once you have your team on the bus, feel free to call us at 651-900-3797 to update your registration.  This is especially crucial if you think you might arrive late. The information we receive before you arrive will make registration much quicker and simpler!

Note that the staggered schedule allows any competitor, regardless of event, to compete in our two experimental categories!

Please note that Impromptu and PROPOSED Extemp Reading will begin 15 minutes after the other events.
