Dear Coaches:

 

The Ball State University Speech Team and Burris Laboratory School are pleased to invite you to our third Red Carpet Affair high school speech tournament to be held on our campus on November 16, 2013.  Our one-day tournament will include 4 preliminary rounds of competition for both varsity and novice (if applied) competitors. Awards will be presented to the top six speakers in each event and top three schools.

 

Registration will be in the Atrium from 7:15-8:15 AM on the day of the tournament.  Extemp draw for round one will begin at 8:15 AM, and the first round for all events will begin at 8:30 AM. You will receive a confirmation e-mail that includes directions and parking information. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful campus. Tournament Information:

Events

We will offer Humorous, Dramatic, Declamation, Discussion, Prose, Poetry, Original Oratory, Impromptu, Foreign Extemp, U.S. Extemp, Memorized Duo, Scripted Duo, Radio Broadcasting, & Original Performance.  You can only enter 8 students per event with a maximum entry of 50 slots per school.

If the entry size permits, we will offer novice sections.  If our numbers are smaller, the divisions will be combined and we will recognize top novices at awards. For our tournament, novice will be defined as first year of competition.

 

Radio

Round I – BREAKING NEWS BULLETIN - (given bulletin, 1 minute spot including open and close is presented);

Round II - ORIGINAL COMMERCIAL (bring in a self-written commercial advertising a national product; 1 minute max.);

Round III – ORIGINAL EDITORIAL (bring in a self-written editorial on professional sports; 2 minute max.);

Round IV - ON-THE-SPOT (2 minute preparation; 2 minute presentation max.; based on an event in previous 10 days and represented in USA Today)

 

Extemp

Students will draw Rounds 1 and 3 and have their choice of either speech for Round 4.

 

Double Entry

Students may enter two events. Those students doubled in Impromptu must go to Impromptu last. Those students doubled in Radio must go to radio first.  Double-entered students are responsible for getting to both events during rounds. Please remind your students who wish to double that they may have to change buildings between events.

 

Awards

We will have awards for the top six in all events.  Sweepstakes trophies are awarded to the top five schools based on cumulative preliminary rounds for both varsity and novice (if applied).

 

Judging

Each school is required to provide one full-time qualified judge for each five entries entered or portion thereof. We can arrange for hired judges.  A hired judge will cost of $50.00 for every five uncovered entries or portion thereof.

 

Food

Concessions will be available from registration to awards and campus food services will be open for lunch.

 

Entries

We should receive your entry no later than 5:00pm, Tuesday, November 12. We would prefer you to make your entry on SpeechWire.  If that is not possible, you can fax your entry to 765.285.2736. You will receive an e-mail confirmation of entries within 24 hours of receipt.  A fee of $5.00 will be assessed for each drop/add/change after Thursday, November 14 at noon.  A fee of $10.00 will be assessed for each drop/change on the day of the tournament.  Please text your same-day drops/changes to Mary at (765-760-3700) as early in the morning as possible.
