Please know that there have been a few changes made in the tournament.  More details are on the downlaodable file "Awards Relief Fund"

With the recent tornado hitting Washington Illinois my team asked if the money from what the trophies would cost at our debate tournament could be sent as a community donation to those in Washington Il. This is what sparked the conversation: as you may, or may not, know Susie Knoblauch our IHSA administrator is a resident of Washington, Il.  She is safe, but on the day of the tornado she was one of a number of people at a nursing home moving individuals to a safe location.  One wing of that nursing home was demolished.  Susie and the residents are all safe.  But life will forever be changed for the people in Washington.  Susie sent a great letter to the Buffalo Grove family (we are doing a fundraising drive for them) that was very touching. My students have requested that our tournament reflect the gratitude we have that we have so much and could possibly assist those who need a bit more.

Please consider the following requests from my team:

They are asking that instead of ordering trophies for the tournament we make a donation of that dollar amount ($700.00) to the Washington relief fund for the community.

In place of new trophies we would like to invite all schools to join us in recycling gently used trophies for the students who place at the BG December Classic.

This is how it would work:

When you arrive at the tournament we will have a reception table set up where schools can bring gracefully aging trophies that they would like to recycle.  Keep in mind the trophies do not have to be debate trophies--- we will take all and any trophies that are headed to an eventual landfall.

As the day precedes an industrious group of students will sort the trophies out so that placement will be obvious. When awards are announced we can move swiftly through a choice process.

During awards students will receive documentation of their placement, plus a reminder of the donation to the relief fund, and the joy of picking out the trophy of choice.

We will send out appropriate labels after the tournament.

We anticipated spending $700 on the trophies this year, so the initial donation to the relief fund will start at this dollar amount.  We are happy to collect from the entire community and increase this amount as a gesture of support and care.

This all being said, we are lowering the cost of entering the tournament for PF teams.  The additional ($25 as opposed to $20 for LD) cost was built in to cover the extra trophies for the teams in PF.

If teams have already cut a check reflecting the old cost it can be refunded, or a team can consider that additional amount to be a donation.

Finally, this is to be a tournament of joy and good cheer.  I’ve understood that Lainee and Scott McGraw have encouraged their students to wear ties and sweaters of the holiday season--- I welcome the reminders of brightness during the winter cold!

Origional Invite:

BGHS Resolved: Debate December Classic

December 7th, 2013

Dear Lincoln Douglas & Public Forum Debate Coach:

The Buffalo Grove Forensics Team cordially invites you and your team to the Buffalo Grove High School Resolved: December Classic to be held on Saturday, December 7th, 2013.  Please note: this year we will offer out-rounds.

Participants in Lincoln Douglas will use the NFL November/December resolution.

Participants in Public Forum will use the NFL November topic.

LD-PF Divisions:

Novice: First year of debate

Junior Varsity: One or two years of debate experience

Varsity: Two or more years of debate experience

Both the Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas divisions will have competition at the varsity, junior varsity, and novice levels. If numbers dictate, Varsity and JV will be collapsed into one Open division for the prelims, but elimination rounds will be separated by JV and Varsity competitors.

Novice consists of students in their first season of debate. JV consists of students in their first or second seasons of debate. Students in their third or fourth season of debate must debate in Varsity. If you are not certain which division your entries should be placed in, just ask.

Each division and level will consist of four single-flighted preliminary rounds and two elimination rounds. Rounds three and four will be power-matched based on all previous rounds. While these rounds will not be lag-powered, it does make for a longer tournament.

Fees:                           $20 per debater in LD

                                    $20 per team in PF

If finances are a major problem for your school, especially if you have a new team and never attended our tournament before, please contact the tournament director to discuss options.

Judging:                      One full judge is required for every two debaters in LD

One full judge is required for every two teams in PF

Fractions of judging? Please round upwards.

Judges can be hired through the tournament on a first-come, first-serve basis at a rate of $140.00 for the day regardless of # of rounds judged.

All judges are expected to arrive at Buffalo Grove by 8am for tournament announcements in the Coaches Lounge.

All judges are expected to be available for the duration of the tournament (8 AM ~6:30 PM). Judges are obligated to judge one round beyond their team’s elimination.  In other words, if your team does not make elimination rounds, judges are still required to be available to be on a panel for one of the semi-final rounds.

Disclosing: Judges are expected to completely and thoroughly fill out each ballot, but cannot disclose their decision. If judges want to provide a BRIEF critique at the end of the round, that is fine, but it does not replace a written ballot that clearly articulates a reason for decision based on the arguments in the round. These ballots are invaluable to coaches and students. If a judge feels a lengthier critique is needed, they should turn in the ballot first, then return to the room and speak with the debaters.

Awards:                    Qualifiers for elimination rounds and top speakers in each division will receive awards.

Registration:             Initial registration for the tournament can start at anytime on SpeechWire.com

The final enrollment (with names by division and judge information) is due: Thursday 12/5/13, 6pm.

Teams with entries without names will have those slots removed.
