Pierce Bluejay Invite

Tournament of Distinguished Speakers

Saturday, January 18, 2014

Hello fellow speech coaches!  It is that time of year again for the annual Pierce Bluejays Tournament, which will be held on Saturday, January 18.  I am the new speech coach at PHS, Melissa Schindler.

This year, we will be giving our tournament the subtitle Tournament of 'Distinguished' Speakers. We will have hidden mustaches around the school and will be awarding a mustache to 'distinguish' the 7th place finishers. (You know, that kid that almost made the finals cut, but not quite.) The 7th place person will not compete in finals, but they will be recognized at the awards ceremony and will be presented with a mustache.

We will only be accepting online registrations at SpeechWire. All results will be available online throughout the meet and after on the SpeechWire’s website. When entering students in duet and OID, please be sure to list full names for all competitors on one line (1 line=1 entry). Also, if only a last name is entered, when your student receives an award their last name will only be announced.

The deadline for entries will be Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Please have all student competitors entered by the deadline.  Registration will close at 6:30 P.M. on the 14th.  You can update and change your entries as many times as you want up until that time, but ABSOLUTELY no additions will be allowed after this time.

Tournament competition will consist of two preliminary rounds with one judge followed by one final round with two judges (varsity only; JV will have one finals judge).  The top six competitors in each division will advance to the final round competition.  All varsity finalists will receive medals.  The top three junior varsity finalists will receive medals while places 4-6 will receive certificates. We have a traveling trophy for the varsity division first place team. Rather than adding to the stack of plaques for teams, we will recognize the runner-up in the varsity division and the champion and runner-up in the JV division with certificates in a shiny synthetic case. Students may cross over in divisions in any events, but please be sure to list them as either varsity or JV, so tabulation can be correct.

Double entries and triple entries are accepted. Please make sure your extempers understand that they MUST be on time for extemp. Waiting on extempers to present can seriously alter the schedule of a meet. Flight A events will consist of OID, Humorous Prose, Informative, Humorous Impromptu, and Poetry while Flight B events will consist of Duet Acting, Serious Prose, Extemporaneous, Persuasive, and Entertainment.  Extemp prep will be in the high school library, located in the middle of the building.  Please pay close attention to the scheduled flights when determining whether or not a student can handle two or more events. Also, no team limit is placed in any event.

Concessions will be in the commons area and will be provided by the Pierce FCCLA chapter. They will be offering numerous entrée choices, as well as fresh baked cookies.

Registration will be in the commons. Homeroom and awards will be in the gymnasium.  All announcements, including finalists, will be posted in the commons area, as well as the gymnasium.

Judges will need to be provided for every 6 ENTRIES.  Uncovered judging slots will be charged $12 per uncovered entry.  Please, please, please arm your judges with stopwatches.  All judges will need to be on call for finals.  A hospitality room for all coaches, judges, and bus drivers will be in the boardroom, located inside the main office. Please see me if your bus driver will be staying, as we have lunch certificates for them as well.

Fees are $7.00 per entry, individual or group.  Fees must be paid at morning registration or earlier.  There will not be any refunds for drops.

Deadline for entries will be Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at 6:30 P.M.  Please try to be prompt with deadlines.

Schedule times for the invite follow below.  The meet will run from approximately 8:00 A.M. through 4:30 P.M.  Registration will begin as early as 7:30 A.M. with all schools checking in no later than 7:45 A.M.
