Pinecrest High School Speech and Debate

Special Notes:

Registration closes on Wednesday, September 25 at 5 pm. Registration fees will be figured based on the number of entries a team has at that time. No additional drop fees will be added.

We hope to offer competition on Novice, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels in speech events with six or more entries and in debate events with eight or more entries. For the purposes of this tournament, a novice is someone in his or her first year of competition in any event. Junior Varsity is open to students in their second year of competition in any event. Varsity or Open level is geared to students of advanced speech or debate ability. Public Forum will use the September topic for all levels. Resolved: Unilateral military force by the U.S. is justified to prevent nuclear proliferation.  In Lincoln Douglas, Varsity and Junior Varsity will use the September-October Varsity topic. Resolved: In a democracy, voting ought to be compulsory. Those competing in Novice will be using the Novice September-October topic. Resolved: Civil Disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.

Oral Interpretation at the Pinecrest Open will consist of alternating rounds of prose and poetry. Please be sure your students are adequately prepared for both genre.

Please plan to arrive on campus no later than 9 am on Saturday, September 28th. Events should get underway promptly at 9:30 am. We ask that you send drops by email to lcarter@ncmcs.org up through 6 pm on Friday, September 28th. Please call 910-603-0690 on Saturday morning to confirm or change your registration once you are on the way to the tournament.

We will again operate through SpeechWire.com and we are fortunate that its creator, Ben Stewart, will be with us at Pinecrest to assist with tournament management. Please plan to stop by the tab room and meet Ben and see the ease of operation offered by SpeechWire.

NOTE:  We are using the September Public Forum topic, the September-October Lincoln-Douglas topic, and legislation from the North Carolina web bank. See the website for this information.

We ask that you make every effort to bring your full requirement of judges and that these judges be trained and ready to assist. The Open will run smoothly only if enough judges are available for every round. If a judge will be available for only 1/2 day, then you should bring a second judge to share the other 1/2 day responsibilities. A limited number of judges will be available for hire for $75 each.

If you have questions concerning registration, the tournament, or securing housing, please email to lcarter@ncmcs.org.

Again, thanks for bringing the spirit of competition to Pinecrest High School.

Libby Carter, Head Coach
