Dear Speech Coach:

Happy New Year! The Munster Varsity Speech Meet will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014.  Preliminary registration is due on Monday, February 3, by 5:00 P.M, CST.  Registration will be from 6:45-7:15 in the Media Center.  Extemp draw will start at 7:30 AM CST and rounds will begin at 8:00 AM.

You may bring up to 7 entries per event. However, you may only bring 4 entries per event on the Sweeps Team.  The additional 3 entries must be placed on the non-sweeps team.  Teams entering more than 40 entries must designate the sweepstakes entries on Speechwire. Speechwire is set up to allow the sweep entries to be “Team A” and the non-sweep entries to be “Team B”.   Three rounds and a final will be run in all events.

Please bring one qualified judge, willing to write informative critiques, for every five entries or fraction thereof.  All judges are obligated to stay until all final rounds start.

Contestants may double. No tripling. No doubling will be allowed in Discussion and Radio.  Extempers may double only in Impromptu and Oratory.  Both duo partners (OP Duos included) may double, but not in duo events.

Radio contestants should bring a current 3-minute newscast, a 1-minute original commercial on a brand name health or beauty product, and a 1-minute editorial concerning AHCA (Affordable Health Care Act).  The final round will be an On-the-Spot taken from the last 10 days of USA Today.

Extemp topics will be taken from current events.  Extempers will draw for Rounds 1 & 3.  Thirty minutes prep time.  The Round 3 topic will be used for the final round.  All extempers are to report to the Resource Lab  by 7:15.

Discussion: The discussion details will be provided closer to the tournament date.

Awards will be given to the top eight individuals in all events.  Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top five schools.  Munster will not compete for team awards.

Lunch will be served in the Food Court.  Plan to eat here since there are no close restaurants.  We look forward to seeing you on the 11th.
Because of security concerns, students are asked to not enter a competition room until the judge is present.

Important: Please make sure to text any drops you have by 6:30 AM on Saturday morning at 219-228-0567. We prefer texting over phone calls.   There will not be any drops to pick up on the day of the tournament.

Sincerely,
