Dear Fellow Speech Coaches!

We would like to invite you to the annual Lakeville North Speech Tournament at Lakeville North High School on Saturday, March 2, 2013.

We will be hosting all 13 MSHSL categories and both MSHSL and NFL rules will be honored.  We allow double entering (including discussion and a non-draw event, but not in discussion and a draw event or two draw events) and for the truly ambitious, triple entering (in everything except discussion and/or two draw events).

We will again offer 3 preliminary rounds of competition, Semi-finals and Finals in all categories with Awards at 5 pm.  We will offer awards to all Semifinalists and Finalists. We will also offer 5 team sweepstakes trophies for Large school division, and a top trophy for Small school division.

In addition to the regular team awards, this year we are adding one more team award that I am very excited about -- The Quality Award -- which will honor the team with the most strength relative to size (so, it will be calculated by dividing total points by number of entries).  We look forward to honoring our first ever winner of this award!

We will again offer 3 preliminary rounds of competition, Semi-finals and Finals in all categories. We will offer awards to all Semifinalists and Finalists. We will also offer 5 team sweepstakes trophies for Large school division, and a top trophy for Small school division. Most of the information you might need will be included below: if you have any other questions, please contact me at jennbaese@gmail.com, or 651-210-5334.

Sincerely,

Jenn Baese, Head Coach, Lakeville North Speech

ENTRIES :

You may enter as many students as you wish in any category. You may make any changes to your registration up until 6 pm on Wednesday, February 27th. You may still make drops after that deadline, but you will be responsible for your entry fees, regardless of drops.

Checks should be sent to: Jennifer Baese | Lakeville North Speech Boosters | 17804 Hydrangea Lane | Lakeville, MN 55044

TOURNAMENT CHECK-IN

Check in will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.   You are encouraged to text or call ahead on my cell -- 651-210-5334 -- with any last minute drops that morning.  LNHS has two entrances and parking lots. Both are fine for use by schools and judges. Registration will be near the tab room, outside room 215.

We will post schedules in prominent locations in the commons and in the judges' lounge. Critique sheets will be available in the commons. Maps will be posted on the walls. A variety of concessions will be available throughout the day in our cafeteria. We will have hot coffee all day and lots of food, including breakfast and lunch, throughout the day for our judges and coaches.

JUDGES:

You will need one judge for every 6 entries or fraction thereof.  All judges are expected to be available through both the semi and final rounds.

We schedule the judges based on the number of students you originally register; we cannot make accommodations Saturday morning because of drops.

Please indicate any of your judges who are "clean" -- unaffiliated with your school or students in any way – we encourage you to bring as many unaffiliated judges as you are able. With a tournament of our nature -- where it is typically fewer teams, many bringing large numbers of students, it has become nearly impossible for us to schedule the tournament without judges seeing students from their own school, or from sometimes having two speakers from the same school in a round. We will try to avoid these situations whenever possible, of course.

CATEGORY INFORMATION:

Both MSHSL and NFL time limits and rules (see mshsl.org and nfl.org) will be honored. Please make sure your judges are aware of this.

Discussion tasks will be from Section II of the outline.  For prelim rounds, tasks will be available in the morning upon arrival; tasks for semi and final rounds will be delivered to the tables at the start of each round.

ALL DRAWS: Each of the three draw events will draw anew for each round, including all three prelims, semis, and finals.

Storytelling: Stories will be taken from the entire list.

Extemp Reading: Stories and poems will be taken from the entire lists.

Extemp Speaking:  There will be separate topic areas for each round.

Per the new rule change, we will also allow laptops in our Extemp Speaking prep/draw area. Students will not be allowed to connect to the internet but may have files stored on laptops, external hard drives and USB drives. We cannot guarantee access to electric outlets, so plan to run on battery power. Any computer malfunction is the competitor's responsibility and prep will not be extended for computer problems.

Informative:  Per the new rule change, make sure your judges are aware that we allow all types of 3D visual aids.  All classrooms will have tables or desks to set things on and all rooms should have screens and electrical outlets, but you may need to bring extension cords to reach outlets.

DIRECTIONS:

Directions to Lakeville North HS: The school address is 19600 Ipava Avenue, Lakeville, MN 55044.  Take 35 South to Highway 50 (just south of the Buck hill Ski Area and Burnsville Center). Turn left at the Highway 50 exit so that you are now going east. After 2 and a half miles on Highway 50, you will come to a stop light at Ipava. Take a left and go up the hill - the high school is there on top of the hill. Park in either lot!
