The Lakeland High School Speech and Debate Team invites you to our 2013 Laker Invitational on January 26, 2013 in LaGrange, IN.

Register through www.speechwire.com by Tuesday, January 22 at 3:30 pm.
We will offer one division (Varsity) with three rounds and a final.
Extemp draw and Broadcasting prep will begin at 8:00 a.m. with Round 1 beginning promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Doubling Restrictions:  Students may double at their own risk.  No doubling in Discussion, Broadcasting, and Congress. Extemp can only double in OO and Impromptu. Both duo partners may double in any event other than a second duo. We will request judges remain in the room for one hour after the round has started. If a doubled student does not arrive within the allotted time, they may receive a last-place ranking for that round.

Entry Limits:  Limit of 5 entries per event, 35 total entries per team.  IF we have enough space after everyone has registered, we may be able to accommodate B teams which will not count toward sweepstakes.  Contact us for details.

Final Registration will run from 7:00-7:45 a.m. (EST).  ON SATURDAY MORNING, please confirm your entries by either calling or texting (765)242-7291. This will ensure that we may begin our tournament on time.

Extemp will draw for rounds 1 (also use for round 2) and 3 (also use for final).
Discussion:
  • The goal of the discussion round is to foster conversation and solve the stated problem.
  • Each round has a minimum time of 30 minutes.  The judge will be in charge of determining when this minimum time has been met.
  • Competitors must speak at least once during the round in order to receive a placing.
  • Each competitor may request a single one-minute period of uninterrupted speaking time during each round.  This request should be directed toward the group, not the judge, and can be done by asking "May I have the floor?"  Upon being granted the request by the group, the judge will keep track of the elapsing 60 seconds and raise his or her hand when it is complete.
  • Judges should not join the conversation; their only role is to rank the contestants and keep track of time.
  • Both paper notes and electronic devices are permitted.  Data/internet access for any electronic devices must be disabled during the round.

The topics are of national concern.  During the round, assume your group is a federal congressional committee who has been given the task to understand the following issues.
Discuss why each issue is important to American citizens, including statistics and relevant examples.
Determine as a group if legislation should be proposed for this issue, and if so, what it should do.

TOPICS:

ROUND 1.  The federal debt ceiling
ROUND 2.  Health care
ROUND 3.  Gun control
FINAL ROUND:  For the final round, the group should summarize the importance of each issue from rounds 1-3 and prioritize legislative action, determining which issue should come first, second, and third.

Lip-Sync:  BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! We will be holding a Lip Sync Contest prior to awards. Interested contestants should come prepared with a 2-4 minute song either on flash drive in mp3 format or on a CD.  Students will be judged solely on non-verbal gestures and how well their mouths line up with the music.  Students may enter as a "solo" or "duo."  Limit of 2 entries per school and 8 entries total.  To enter this contest, email us directly, or we may accept entries on the day of the tournament if room is still available.  FIRST COME, FIRST PRIORITY!!!

Should there be any concerns over weather, please call after 5:30 a.m.  Again, my number is (765)242-7291.
