Dear Forensics Coach,

The Sun Prairie High School Forensics team invites you and your team to the sixth annual Sun Prairie Forensics Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, February 2, 2013. Our goal is to reach schools in a variety of regions throughout the state. We are prepared to offer a professionally-run, fun and exciting day of competition.

Special Notes:

-We are allowing students to double enter in the tournament in all events except Group Discussion. This will allow motivated students the opportunity to compete in two events.

-We’ll be using the SpeechWire registration and tabulation software system. To register your team, visit: www.speechwire.com

-We will be offering Student Congress Friday night.

Rules         

WFCA rules will be used for all events (For a list of rules see www.wfcaforensics.org) with the following modifications:

-Allowance of one 4x6 notecard in Oratory.

-Solo acting and OIL are a maximum of 10 minutes, but 8-minute performances will not be penalized.

-Solo Actors will be allowed to use a chair.

Group Discussion Questions: Wisconsin Questions!

Round 1: What, if anything, should be done to address the rising cost of tuition at Wisconsin’s colleges and universities?

Round 2: What, if anything, should be done to improve Wisconsin’s transportation infrastructure?

Round 3: What, if anything, should be done to increase tourism in Wisconsin?

Final Round: What, if anything, should be done to increase high school forensics participation in Wisconsin?

Awards

Trophies will be presented to the top three competitors and medals to the remaining finalists. In addition, the top novice competitor in each category will receive a medal. Team trophies will be awarded to schools in three divisions using the breakdown below.

Large School: 22-25 entries, based on total points

Medium School: 14-21 entries, based on team average

Small School: 6-13 entries, based on team average

Food

The SPHS Forensics Boosters will have breakfast and lunch for sale.

Deadlines

-Please register via SpeechWire by Friday, January 25th by 5:00 pm.

-Teams can and should manage their own drops on Speechwire.com until 4:00pm, Thursday, Jan. 31. After that point, email drops to jcpesch@spasd.k12.wi.us at your earliest possible convenience. 

-Entries dropped after that time will still be charged.      

-Day of tournament drops are strongly discouraged. Please call-in or text last minute drops as soon as possible on tournament day to John Peschl at 608-347-9553 or Elliott Fischer at 608-609-0290. You're strongly encouraged to email a cell number you can be reached at on tournament day to jcpesch@spasd.k12.wi.us, so tournament personnel can call you in case a member of your team fails to check-in by 8:15am.

Fees

A fee of $9.00 for each individual entry and $12 for group entries (Duo, Group Interp, Play Acting). Entry fees are per entry, not per student. Fees will be based on your confirmed entry.

Judges      

Each school must provide one judge for every five entries or portion of five entries. Each duo, group interp or play acting is considered one entry. Please try to bring your own quality judges. Your judge commitment will be based on your entry as of Thursday, Jan. 31. We will have hired judges available for you at a cost of $100 per judge. Teams with over 50 entries/10 judges are required to hire judges from the tournament. Total entries are not capped.

Entries

Your top 25 entries will count toward team scores with a maximum of four entries per event. Additional entries are welcome. Students are allowed to enter two events.

SpeechWire        

-Please register via Speechwire.com no later than 5:00pm, Friday, January 25th. If you encounter any problems with the online registration, don't hesitate to email fischere@uwosh.edu or jcpesch@k12.wi.us. A registration confirmation will be emailed out after registration closes. Coaches can also view up-to-the minute fees on Speechwire.com.

-Note on Varsity/Novice designation: When prompted to enter a student’s division, please use varsity for all competitors EXCEPT those students in their FIRST year of high school forensics competition. Please mark these students as NOVICE. This will allow us to recognize top novice competitors at awards like we have in the past. Novice students will not be in their own section and your top 25 students will count for team sweepstakes.

Friday Night Congress

*For congress to take place, there is a 3 school, 10 student minimum

 

Student Congress Schedule:

3:30-4:00   Registration in Schey Commons

4:00-5:20   Session I

5:30-6:30   Session II

6:30-7:00   Dinner Break

7:00-8:00   Session III

8:15-8:30   Final Voting and Awards

 

Fees

Each entry will cost $8.

 

Judges      

Every school must provide one judge. If possible, please provide an experienced judge who is able to act as a Parliamentarian.

 

Registration

Your Student Congress registration is due by email to jcpesch@spasd.k12.wi.us by Friday, January 25th at 5:00 PM. Do not use SpeechWire for Student Congress registration.

 

Dinner

We will have a brief dinner break following session 2. Dinner for contestants is included with the entry fee. Vegetarian options will be available.

 

Legislation

-Please e-mail any bills and resolutions to jcpesch@spasd.k12.wi.us. Be sure that all Legislation is formatted as a Microsoft Word or PDF file.

-All Legislation should be of a serious nature and worthy of academic debate. Legislation must also be original to the school submitting it.

-Legislation must be received by 5:00 PM on Monday, January 28th, 2013.

-Legislation Packets will be e-mailed on Tuesday, January 29th. If your students would like to receive the legislation e-mail, please include their e-mail addresses with your registration.
