Indiana University East Annual Speech Tournament
General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Indiana. View manager contact information Dear Coaches, We are honored to be able to host our annual high school speech tournament on Saturday, December 1, 2012. Susie Hittson and Holly Hathaway will be managing the tournament and will continue to support my work as chair for the event. This year, we are pleased to be offering a debate event, Congress, in addition to our regular speech events. We are also looking forward to increasing IU East faculty, staff and student presence during the tournament. I’ve already seen interest from faculty in History and Political Science programs regarding our new Congress event, and I’m sure my public speaking students will be excited about the extra credit opportunities to observe the high school students. Please don’t forget to encourage your students, especially juniors and seniors, to compete in our tournament based on the opportunities to win scholarships. Top place finishers in each category will be offered an $800 Red Wolf Scholarship to IU East ($200 per year, renewable for up to four years). If a student wins in more than one category, they will be eligible for even more in college savings. It is crucial that top place finishers complete a special admissions card, which will ask for their name, address, current high school classification, etc. Our Admissions Director needs one filled-out for every winning category, even if the student won more than one event. Indiana University East’s Office of Food Services continues to provide catering services for this event. Judges and tournament office workers will be provided coffee, a light lunch and refreshments. For the students, we will have great offerings at The Den, the campus restaurant in Whitewater Hall, and at Brewfus, the campus coffee bar in Springwood Hall’s Graf Center Lounge. Please remind your students to either bring lunch or at least $6 to purchase lunch. Teams are also welcome to bring food or send an adult to the nearby Subway or Wendy’s near the campus. Registration, the judges’ lounge, student commons, and The Den are all located in Whitewater Hall. Competition will take place in that building and others a short distance away. Students should be advised to bring a coat and an umbrella to be prepared for inclement weather as they navigate the campus. Practice rooms will be available and students will have lots of space in which to gather as a team and/or rehearse individually. Last year, a number of the tables we put out were claimed by teams early, so make sure you arrive early enough to claim a table in Whitewater Hall, as their numbers are limited. For the discussion event, the general topic area is the internet. Students will be given specific prompts at the meet. One final note about changes to the folders we provided last year to coaches. For this tournament, folders will not include schematics. In an attempt to be more environmentally-friendly, we hope to display schematics on the wall of Whitewater Hall along with results as they come in. Don’t forget to register by November 27, 2012. It is important for us to know how many of you will be joining us so that we can prepare to be the best hosts possible and create a fun and educational experience for all participants and observers. We look forward to seeing you soon! Elvinet S.
