Dear Speech Coach,
Moline High School invites you to embark on a journey to the Western side of the great state of Illinois....(insert drumroll & fanfare here). We are hosting the 2nd annual MHS Encore! Speech Tournament on December 15, 2012. As this date coincides with my daughter's second birthday, we will try to make the tournament run as smoothly as possible so that I can get home for birthday cake! Cake & Party favors aside, it would be great to have you join us for what will hopefully be a great way to end your 2012 competition!
STRUCTURE: Two flighted preliminary rounds (one being double-judged), and varsity and novice finals. Extemp and Radio are B events. Please plan on arriving by 7:30 AM.
ENTRY: A maximum of 3 entries per event. Please contact me if your team wishes to compete with more than that. Please register online using SpeechWire.
JUDGES: Each team is expected to bring one qualified judge for every six entries. If you wish to bring extra entries (numbers permitting), you will be asked to bring extra judges as well. If you contact me soon enough, hired judges may be available at a cost of $75 per judge.
FEES: 2 entries/event: $100
3 entries/event: $150
If you want to enter more than 3/event, please contact me.
EVENTS: All 14 IHSA events.
AWARDS: All individual finalists (varsity and novice) and the top 3 teams will receive recognition, along with a donation made to the charity of their choice.
REGISTRATION: Begins at 7:00 AM.
EXT/IMP TOPICS: Each team should submit 5 Impromptu topics and 5 Extemp questions via SpeechWire.
ENTRY DEADLINE: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by 4:00PM
FINAL POSTING ON SPEECHWIRE: Friday, December 14 by 12:00 PM
RULES: IHSA rules will apply, with the following notes:
Impromptu - Students will speak on a topic of their choice from a selection of three topics. Students will be given 2 minutes to prep and a 6 minute speaking time limit.
Radio - Prep once for prelims and prep again for finals.
Extemp - Prep once for prelims and prep again for finals.
Time - Only in Radio as per IHSA rules.
SPECIAL DIRECTIONS: When driving on Avenue of the Cities, you'll notice an electronic marquis for MHS. The high school is set back, down the driveway from the marquis. Know that you will pass Roosevelt Elementary on your right (and possibly even the alternative high school/ROE if you are driving East on Avenue of the Cities).
