BullDog Battle-High School
General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Indiana. View manager contact information Dear Coaches:
We are very pleased to invite you and your team to the Butler University Bulldog Battle high school speech tournament. The tournament will be held on our beautiful Indianapolis campus on Saturday, December 8, 2012.
The Bulldog Battle will feature varsity competition in fourteen events. The tournament will be 3 rounds and a final. Students can double enter with minor exceptions for Discussion and Radio and the extemporaneous events. We will present awards to the event finalists as well as team sweepstakes, and a special sweepstakes for schools with smaller entries; however no school may enter more than 40 entries total. Schools may not field a second team.
Please note the entry deadline of 5:00 p.m. EST, Monday December 3, 2012.
We have decided to charge $2.00 for drops the day of the tournament, but this year there will be NO ADDS or pick-up of dropped slots. Our last tournament was slowed down considerably by adds on the day of the tournament.
We anticipate an educational, challenging, and very entertaining weekend and hope that you will join us. This tournament will be run more like a college tournament with written comments on ballots, ballot rankings only available in the judge’s lounge, and flights. Students might be traveling to multiple buildings in December so dress accordingly. Please contact us with any questions by calling (317) 940-9847, faxing (317) 940-9252, or sending email to jcrawfor@butler.edu .

Tournament Procedures
Event Rules Indiana High School Forensic Association (IHSFA) rules apply for all events except where indicated below. For more information such as event descriptions and time limits, please refer to the IHSFA constitution at http://www.ihsfa.org (click on the link that says “Constitution”).
Discussion Contestants in Discussion cannot double enter. The Bulldog Battle will use the IHSFA Discussion topic current for December 2012.
Impromptu Those entered in impromptu must go to their impromptu round first. Given the nature of the event, expect anything (a quotation, word, object, etc.). But IHSFA time limits still apply.
Radio Broadcasting Contestants in Radio cannot double enter. The Bulldog Battle will provide radio copy for Rounds 1 and 2. Round 1 will feature commercial copy, Round 2 editorial copy. For Round 3, contestants will be expected to present a two-minute newscast prepared before the tournament and brought to the tournament. In the final round, a picture from USA Today (from the previous two weeks) will be provided along with a brief caption that includes the time and place of the event depicted. The contestant assumes he or she is “on the spot” and reports for two minutes.
Scheduling and Tabulation 1. The Tab Room will remain closed at all times. 2. Preliminary rounds have one judge. Final rounds have three judges. 3. Ties in preliminary rounds are broken by the guidelines set forth by the National Forensic League (available in the District Tournament Manual). 4. Team sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in the Small School Division and the top three teams in the Open Division. Team points are based on out final round results only.
1st place = 12 points 4th place = 6 points 2nd place = 10 points 5th place = 4 points 3rd place = 8 points 6th place = 2 points Guidelines for Judges
As an added convenience, coaches may want to duplicate this page and share it with their school’s judges.
To all of you who give their time for this activity: THANK YOU!!! We appreciate your help and support that makes this event possible.
• Please drop off ballots promptly after each round. Turning in ballots right after each round is necessary to keep the tournament running on time. • You can pick up ballots approximately fifteen minutes before each round. Ballot pick-up and drop-off tables are located outside of Jordan Hall Room 141. • When dropping off ballots, please wait for those at the table to check the information. • No ties in rank are permitted. • Call double entered competitors to speak before students who are entered only in one event. (They should sign into the round with a “DE” after their name). • Students may be penalized in rank or speaker points for violating the event’s time limit. Whether or not or to what extent they are penalized in a particular round is solely at your discretion. • Students should display professional and courteous behavior at all times. They should be supportive audience members for other performers. It is also appropriate to penalize students for inappropriate conduct. • Please strive to provide a mix of positive and constructive comments, tempering the latter with kindness. • Tip: write comments on the ballot as the speakers perform to minimize time spent between speakers. • Tip: discretely rank speakers on a separate sheet of paper as the round progresses to save time at the end of the round. • Please bring a stopwatch.
A note regarding logistics…
Our tournament is hubbed in Jordan Hall, the largest classroom building on campus. As such, most preliminary rounds and all out rounds stay in one building. Please note, however, that this involves some stair climbing (between the ground and third floors) and the possibility of going outside to other buildings. The Jordan Hall elevator is quite slow and should be reserved for those, needing special assistance. Should any special needs arise, please ask one of the tournament directors for help. We’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.
