Sabre Speech Shindig

Dear Speech Coach:
I am happy to announce that Streamwood High School will again be hosting the Sabre Speech Shindig, 4th Annual Sabre Speech Shindig that is, on Saturday, November 3rd, and that this is your invitation to this momentous event.  This tournament is for NOVICE AND JV competitors only.

BUT, here’s the thing, we are looking for Varsity members who are willing to be another set of eyes in the round.  We would love for them to critique those in the round.  This is an idea that we tried a bit last year, and it worked out well.  The critiques will not be used to rank.  They are just to help you better prepare your competitors for the season.

We are looking forward to hosting your team.  A good time shall be had by all.

Now down to business.  Our tournament will look like this:

7:00 Registration Starts Sabre Center
7:45 Extemp Prep West Library
8:00 Coaches and Judges Meeting Faculty Lounge
8:30 Round 1 – All Events
10:00 Round 2 – All Events
11:30 Round 3 – All Events
1:30 Awards Ceremony Auditorium

Entries Each team may have two entries per event; students may double enter.  If you want to bring more, just let me know, and, if the space is available, we can make the necessary arrangements.

Fees You may send or bring your check for $90 for teams with one entry per event (1-14 entries), $125 for teams with two entries per event (15-28 entries), and $175 for teams with three entries per event (29+ entries).

Judges Please bring one (1) judge per five (5) entries, with a maximum of five (5) judges for a full team (28 entries).  Judging assignments will be based on your preliminary entry form.  You will be responsible for covering all judging assignments regardless of drops on the day of the tournament.

Please be sure to provide your own stopwatches.

Event Specifics RADIO – Radio speakers should have a prepared radio program not more than twenty-four hours old.

EXTEMP – Extemporaneous speakers will prep once for the day’s competition.

IMPROMPTU – We will be following the IHSA format for impromptu which will require impromptu speakers to prep three times for two (2) minutes each prior to their 6 minute speech, and it all will take place in the same room as performance.

TIME – With the exception of radio, there will be no penalties for time.  Time will be provided for informational purposes only.

Awards The top six (6) competitors will receive awards.  We will NOT break any ties.  The top five (5) schools will be announced and will receive a special prize with the top three (3) schools with the highest per entry score will also receive team awards.  The scores for team awards will be based solely on the top performer from each school.

Concessions Concessions will be available for students throughout the day for both breakfast and lunch.  Judges and Coaches will be supplied with yummy goodness throughout the day.

We look forward to hearing from you by Friday, October 29th to confirm you are coming, and how many entries you will have.  You may email, snail mail, or fax your confirmation with 10 impromptu topics, and 10 extemp topics.  We will be using Speechwire, so with confirmation I will forward you the password needed to enter the needed information.
