General information This information is from a tournament in a past season! This is a High School tournament in Texas. View manager contact information
Bush Institute Dallas Urban Debate Alliance Tournament on Saturday October 20, 2012.
The location of all events will be
Westin Park Central Hotel
12720 Merit Drive
Dallas, Texas
Each participating school will be initially allowed to enter up to 6 students who have previously debated and who have submitted a Data Release and Student Likeness form. Until said forms are received, teams will be placed on the waitlist. On Friday, October 12, waitlist teams with forms will be lifted up until the 100 student limit for the tournament. If your forms are not turned in by then, you risk losing the chance of having students participate. Your students may be from any year of debate and competing in this tournament will not comrpomise their ability to go novice or JV at a later date.
Transportation for the tournament will be reimbursed by the Bush Institute. Please save receipts for the appropriate size van and submit following appropriate procedures promptly post the tournament.
As part of the tournament, coaches and students will be invited to a dinner with donors, judges, DISD and local administrators, and President George W. Bush & First Lady Laura Bush. As a result, DUDA asks that students come dressed appropriately during the day for a formal event in the evening. Their nicest attire that is comfortable to debate in all day is requested. Students should also be prepared to behave appropriately for this event.
Students are also required to participate in all parts of the day, including a lunch time lecture provided by a transportation infrastructure policy expert. Your presence during this lecture is also requested.
You will be requested to judge upon occasion, but by and large the judging pool will be 25 judges who will have just learned about debate moments prior during a training session. Although this is a "varsity" rules tournament where any affirmative may be read, it is *strongly* advised that students not prepare to give highly technical debate arguments. Instead, arguments that are appropriate for a public audience will yield them better results.
In addition, there will be an optional lecture at 2pm by Roberto Leon - a scholar on US-Mexican policy - for parents. Parents are invited to join us for this lecture (which will be bilingual) and stay for awards at 2:30pm.
During the awards ceremony, over $10,000 in scholarships will be given to students and to your schools for their success. DISD Principals and administrators will be invited to join us for this event as well.
The winners of the quarterfinalists (top 8 students) will be invited to come back on Sunday for a modified one-on-one student competition where they are eligible again for another several thousand in college scholarships. Participation in the quarterfinal debate is contigent upon students willingness to return for competition on Sunday.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or ask.
