Welcome!

 

Northrop High School will be hosting a Speech Tournament on Saturday, December 1, 2012.

 

Entries:             Entries are due by Wednesday, November 28 at 5:00 P.M. After that, only name changes and drops will be accepted. All registration will be done on Speechwire.com

                        There is no entry limit. However, only the top 4 competitors in each event, per team up to 40 will count towards sweepstakes points.

 

Judges:             Each school is required to be bring 1 judge for every 5 entries or fraction thereof.

 

Events:             All IHSFA Speech Events and Congress will be offered.

All events, other than Congress, will have three preliminary rounds and a final.

 

Divisions:          Novice and Varsity will be defined as first year of competition or fewer than 50 NFL Points. Teams who do not enter NFL points must enter their entire team as Varsity.

 

Congress:         Bills 1, 5, 12, 14 will be used. 7 will be an alternate.

 

Radio:              Round 1: 3-minute Newscast (student written)

                        Round 2: 2-minute Editorial (student’s choice)

                        Round 3: 1-minute Commercial on a piece of Literature on the Indiana High School Reading List (The Great Gatsby, Lord of the Rings, Macbeth, etc.)

                        Finals: On The Spot

 

Discussion:       What should be the future of Discussion in IHSFA?

                        Background: Over the past few years, there has been a number of problems with the event. The overarching question tends to be: How do you have a competition in an event that is ultimately about consensus?

                        Competitors are expected to research the history of this event. This includes, but not limited to….

                                    -Talking to past competitors

                                    -Talking to coaches

                        -Looking at recent tournaments’ invitation letters on IHSFA to see what is being done at various competitions.

-Reflect on past personal experiences. What went right? What went wrong? Why?

 

Special Note: Varsity and Novice will be combined during competition, but separated for awards.

 

**An IHSFA Council Member will observe the Final Round of competition to take notes and report back to the Executive Board.

 

Doubling:          Only Congress and Discussion cannot double.

                        Duo can double in another duo under certain conditions…

  • The duo partners MUST stay the same.
  • The scripts must be different.

Extemp can double in any other doubling event. (Including another extemp)

 

7:00-8:00 am:   Registration

8:00am:            Extemp Prep and Radio Round 1

8:30am:            Round 1 for all other events.

 

 

Awards:           Awards will be given to the top 10 teams. Sweepstakes points will be awarded on the 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis.
